Tupãrenda Sanctuary

Nation of God, heart of America

History of the Sanctuary

Since the founding of the Schoenstatt Movement in Paraguay, the first members of the family focused on finding a suitable place to build the sanctuary. The land had to meet certain requirements in terms of distance, size and accessibility.

In 1979, the first offer was made for the land located at Km 37 of Route 2 and in the early months of 1980 the purchase-sale of the land that was providentially already called Tupãrenda (God’s dwelling) was finalized.

On October 28, 1980, the Virgin of Caacupé, on her tour of the area, blessed the place with her presence.

The following year, on October 18, 1981, Mons. Ismael Rolón, Archbishop of Asunción at the time, blessed the recently built sanctuary, which would soon become a place of pilgrimage and veneration for the Three Times Admirable Mother of Schoenstatt.

The mission of the Tupãrenda Sanctuary

Each Schoenstatt sanctuary has a specific mission according to the desires of the Schoenstatt family of the place. For its preparation, the history, culture, values and reality of the town within which the Sanctuary is built is usually taken into account. It is also considered as a response to the needs and aspirations of the people. The P.K. he always thought of the Nation of God, where God and Mary reign for eternity.

By living this mission, the Shrine becomes an important center of evangelization. The P.K. was strongly attracted to the organization of the Jesuits.

To this is added the heroic life of a great Paraguayan Jesuit: San Roque González de Santa Cruz, whose martyred heart is preserved until today.

These aspects were the basis for discovering the name and the mission. This effort should have two characteristics:

  • The link to Mary must lead to the change of man and the change of society.
  • The connection to Mary must lead to a gradual discovery of God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. Thus, Mary constitutes a path to the Holy Trinity.

Respecting these criteria of spirituality, the Schoenstatt movement in Paraguay elaborated the mission of the Tupãrenda Shrine and synthesized it in this motto: “NATION OF GOD, HEART OF AMERICA”.

Official Recognition

The sanctuary of Tupãrenda has been officially recognized as a Diocesan sanctuary through a document of the Archbishop of Asunción dated August 8, 1985, which recognizes the “sacred place of Tupãrenda” as a constant goal of pilgrimage for the faithful, since the day of its solemn blessing on October 18, 1981. It is further stated that it is an invaluable contribution to the evangelization of our people.

On August 9, 1988, the Archbishop of Asunción appointed a Rector for the Tupãrenda sanctuary, with the corresponding powers, considering the need for a person in charge to encourage and direct the influx of faithful.

The Tupãrenda sanctuary was also designated as a place where indulgences are offered.
